When most people hear “Hartford City Hall,” a wedding venue probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind.
But walk through the doors of Hartford City Hall and that changes pretty quickly.
With its soaring atrium, marble staircases, ornate arches, balconies, and incredible natural light, City Hall feels much more like a historic European landmark than a government building. Built in 1915 in the Beaux-Arts style, the building's three-story central atrium stretches 150 feet and is topped by a glass skylight.
And from a photographer's perspective, that's what makes it such a fun place to photograph a wedding.
There are grand spaces for dramatic portraits, quiet corners for more intimate moments, and enough architectural detail that you can create a full gallery without every photograph looking the same.
I've photographed couples throughout the building, and these are some of my favorite spots.
The Atrium
The first thing that catches your eye when you walk into Hartford City Hall is the atrium.
It's hard not to stop and look up.
The natural light coming through the skylight, the marble floors, the columns, arches, balconies, and ornate railings all come together to create a pretty incredible backdrop. The atrium is also where larger wedding ceremonies are often held, while smaller ceremonies and elopements can take place on the upper balconies.
For photography, I love using the atrium for the big, dramatic portraits; the photos that really show you where you are.
But there's also something nice about the fact that the architecture doesn't have to overpower the photograph. The neutral colors and natural light allow the focus to stay on the couple.
Sometimes it's as simple as having you stand together, hold hands, and take in the space around you.
Other times, we'll use the balconies and different levels of the atrium to create something a little more editorial.
Either way, there's no shortage of ways to photograph it.
The Grand Staircase
The staircases at City Hall are probably one of my favorite places to slow things down and make a few portraits.
There's something about a staircase that naturally creates movement in a photograph. Instead of putting a couple against a blank wall and asking them to pose, we can use the architecture to create depth, leading lines, and different perspectives.
I might have one of you walk down the stairs while the other waits at the landing. Or we might photograph from above and let the staircase frame you.
And sometimes, the best thing to do is just let you interact with each other.
That's one of the things I love about photographing weddings in places like Hartford City Hall. I don't need to manufacture a complicated pose every time. The building is already doing a lot of the work.
My job is to put you in a good spot, give you just enough direction to feel comfortable, and let the moment happen.
The Upper Balconies
The balconies are where Hartford City Hall starts to feel a little more intimate.
From up here, you get a completely different perspective of the atrium. You can look across the building, use the arches as frames, or photograph the two of you together with all of that architecture falling away behind you.
These spaces are also used for smaller ceremonies and elopements, which makes them especially nice for couples who want something intimate without sacrificing the feeling of having a beautiful wedding venue.
I especially like photographing couples along the balcony railings.
There's something simple about standing together, looking at each other, and letting the architecture surround you. The photographs feel elegant without feeling overly posed.
Don't Forget the Little Moments
One of my favorite photographs from this set is actually the one in the elevator.
It isn't the biggest room in the building. It isn't the most impressive architectural feature.
And that's exactly why I like it.
Wedding photography isn't just about finding the most beautiful backdrop and taking a perfect portrait. Some of the photographs you'll care about years from now are the ones that remind you what the day actually felt like.
A quick moment together between locations.
A laugh.
A quiet conversation.
The two of you squeezed into an elevator for a few seconds.
Those little pieces of the day are worth photographing too.
So while I'm absolutely going to take advantage of everything that makes Hartford City Hall beautiful, I'm also paying attention to what is happening between the big moments.
Your Ceremony in the Atrium
And then there's the reason you're there in the first place: getting married.
Standing at the center of the atrium with your closest friends and family around you completely changes the way the space feels.
The building's architecture becomes part of the ceremony; the marble beneath your feet, the balconies above you, the light coming through the skylight, and all of your favorite people gathered around you.
Hartford City Hall currently offers the atrium as a wedding ceremony and event space, with the City listing it as a wedding ceremony venue. Current city documents also list both smaller atrium elopement rentals and larger full-atrium rentals.
And from a photography standpoint, the atrium gives you something I really love: scale.
There's a huge difference between a close-up photograph of you exchanging vows and a photograph that pulls back to show the entire room, with everyone you love surrounding you.
You get both.
Why I Love Photographing Weddings at Hartford City Hall
One of the best things about Hartford City Hall is how much variety you can get without having to spend your wedding day traveling from one location to another.
You can have:
Grand and editorial portraits in the atrium.
Dramatic photographs on the staircases.
Quiet, intimate moments on the balconies.
Candid and unexpected photographs in places like the elevator.
Emotional documentary photographs during your ceremony.
All within the same building.
And that's what I try to do with every wedding I photograph.
Yes, I want to give you beautiful portraits that you're excited to put on your walls.
But I also want your gallery to feel like your day.
The nervous excitement before the ceremony. The way you look at each other when you think nobody is watching. Your friends laughing in the background. Your parents tearing up. The little moments you didn't even realize were happening.
Those are the photographs that bring you back.
